Broken Key Extraction in Ridgehill
The apartment key snapped mid-turn, leaving the cylinder twisted halfway between locked and open. The building manager's spare is somewhere across town and nobody else has a copy.

The tools are simple and precise. A hook extractor is a thin strip of spring steel with a barb at the tip; it slides along the groove of the keyway above or below the fragment, snags one of the cuts, and walks it out. A spiral extractor works like a tiny screw, threading into the ridges of the cuts and gripping as it turns. Fine-tipped extractor pliers handle a piece that shows above the face. A tension tool brings a turned plug back to rest. None of these push inward, which is the whole point: the piece comes out the way it went in and the cylinder stays whole.
How the visit goesThe key went in like any other morning, you turned it, and something gave with a small metallic click. The bow is still between your fingers. The rest of the blade is sitting inside the deadbolt, and the door is locked.

How the visit goes

- 1
Checks particular to a vehicle
A car adds a few questions. Did the key break in the door, the trunk or the ignition? Does the head in your hand hold a transponder chip or remote, and does the car start with the spare if there is one? Is the steering wheel locked, which can hold an ignition cylinder under tension and pin the fragment in place? Do the other doors open with the same key, or is the vehicle on a different key for the ignition and doors? These answers decide whether the job is a door extraction and a new blade, or an ignition extraction that needs the wheel freed and the wafers checked first.

When the piece is standing proud
A fragment that shows above the cylinder face looks like the easy case, and it is, provided nobody pushes on it. The locksmith grips it with fine-jawed extractor pliers or needle-point tweezers made for the purpose, steadies the cylinder with the other hand, and pulls straight out along the line of the keyway. If it resists, the plug is checked for rest position rather than the pull being increased, because a piece forced against lifted pins can bend them. A trace of dry lubricant at the keyway entrance eases a tight fit. The piece comes out whole, and the lock is ready to test.

A clear record for the landlord or manager
If the lock belongs to a rental unit, a condo or a workplace, you get a plain account of what was done: the fragment removed, the cylinder inspected and serviced, any key cut, and whether a rekey or replacement was recommended. Tenants and landlords in this province each carry obligations when locks are changed and keys are shared, so if the cylinder was replaced or rekeyed, the note records who now holds which key. For a property manager it closes the ticket cleanly; for you it means the next conversation about that door starts from facts rather than memory.

What affects the quote
- 1
How far the locksmith travels
Every call-out includes the drive. A lock on the next street and one at a rural address an hour out are different trips, and the quote includes travel as its own consideration.
- 2
Where the key broke
A house deadbolt, a knob, an older mortise case, a padlock, a car door and a vehicle ignition each call for different access and different care, and the quote follows the hardware.
- 3
Condition of the cylinder
Worn pins, a loose cap, grit or corrosion found after the piece is out may call for a service, a rekey or a new cylinder, each explained and quoted separately.

Broken Key Extraction: questions
Why do keys break more in winter?
A daytime thaw sends meltwater into the keyway, and overnight it freezes with the plug held solid. The key goes in, meets resistance, and the natural reaction is to turn harder. Brass gives before ice does, especially at a deep cut that has thinned over years. Cold also stiffens old grease in the cylinder. De-icer, gentle warmth and a dry lubricant break the pattern.
Can a new key be made from the two broken halves?
Usually. Laid end to end, the halves show the full set of cuts and identify the blank, and a locksmith reads them with a gauge and cuts a fresh key to those depths on a code machine. That is better than tracing the broken blade on a duplicator, because a worn key copied is a worn key repeated. If a spare or the key code exists, that is used instead.
Does the glue trick work?
It is a well-known idea and a poor one. A drop of adhesive on the other half rarely bonds to a piece of brass sitting in a tight keyway, and what it does bond to is the cylinder, the pins and the face of the lock. That film then has to be dissolved before proper extractors can slide in. Keep the halves apart and dry.

What the census means at the door
23%
Newer homes. About 23% of homes in Brampton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Where most homes are recent, the doors themselves are sound and the work is mostly about keys and control: who holds them, whether contractor keys were retired, and whether one key can open everything. The visit is often more conversation than drilling.
53%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 53% of homes in Brampton (2021 Census).
In an area with both houses and attached homes, the work varies by the door. A detached house wants all its exterior doors on one key; a suite door wants a cylinder that suits a metal frame and respects building rules. A locksmith carries parts for both.
