Broken Key Extraction
The apartment key snapped mid-turn, leaving the cylinder twisted halfway between locked and open. The building manager's spare is somewhere across town and nobody else has a copy.

If a key has just snapped in your lock, the most helpful thing you can do is nothing further to the lock. Keep the half in your hand, note whether the door is locked, and resist the tweezers and the glue, both of which push the piece deeper and add material the locksmith must clear first. On the phone, describe the lock, whether any of the blade shows, and whether the key turned when it broke. Have photo identification to hand, or the ownership papers if it is a vehicle. That short conversation means the locksmith arrives with the right extractors and a plan.
How the visit goesYou were locking up on the way out when the key broke in the lock. Now the door is unlocked, a piece of key is jammed in the cylinder, and you were already running late for work.

How the visit goes

- 1
The half in your hand
The bow and stub you are holding are worth a look before anything else. The cuts on it identify the key blank and give most of the bitting, so a replacement can be read straight from it and the fragment once they are side by side. Its condition tells a story too: thinning at the cuts, a slight bend, a crack line or a shiny worn tip all say the key was near the end of its life. The locksmith also asks about spares. A crisp spare, or the key code tag that came with the lock, is a better pattern for the new key than any worn copy.
- 2
When the piece is standing proud
A fragment that shows above the cylinder face looks like the easy case, and it is, provided nobody pushes on it. The locksmith grips it with fine-jawed extractor pliers or needle-point tweezers made for the purpose, steadies the cylinder with the other hand, and pulls straight out along the line of the keyway. If it resists, the plug is checked for rest position rather than the pull being increased, because a piece forced against lifted pins can bend them. A trace of dry lubricant at the keyway entrance eases a tight fit. The piece comes out whole, and the lock is ready to test.

Habits that keep keys in one piece
A few small changes stop most repeat breaks. Push the key fully home before turning, and turn from the bow with a level hand, never with pliers or from the tip. Keep the house key off box-cutting and ice-scraping duty; every bend fatigues the blade at its narrowest cut. Replace a key the moment it shows a kink, a crack line or rounded cuts, and cut the replacement from code or a crisp original. Keep the ring light. If the lock itself starts to stiffen, that is the cue to lubricate or call, because a stiff lock is the one that breaks keys.
In the van
- Fine-jawed extractor pliers
- Vehicle key blades and chip shells
- Manufacturer-approved cylinder lubricant
- Key blanks and code cutter
- Replacement cylinder or deadbolt
What affects the quote
- 1
Number of keys cut
Copies are counted individually. One replacement for a single occupant and four for a household are different lines, and you choose the number on the spot.
- 2
Removing the cylinder to free it
A deep or bound fragment may need the cylinder taken off the door and the plug pushed out from behind on the bench. That disassembly and reassembly is quoted on its own.
- 3
Locked or unlocked door
If the door is locked, the extraction is followed by opening it, which is quoted as its own part of the visit. If the door is open, the work is extraction and securing.

Broken Key Extraction: questions
Why do keys break more in winter?
A daytime thaw sends meltwater into the keyway, and overnight it freezes with the plug held solid. The key goes in, meets resistance, and the natural reaction is to turn harder. Brass gives before ice does, especially at a deep cut that has thinned over years. Cold also stiffens old grease in the cylinder. De-icer, gentle warmth and a dry lubricant break the pattern.
Can a new key be made from the two broken halves?
Usually. Laid end to end, the halves show the full set of cuts and identify the blank, and a locksmith reads them with a gauge and cuts a fresh key to those depths on a code machine. That is better than tracing the broken blade on a duplicator, because a worn key copied is a worn key repeated. If a spare or the key code exists, that is used instead.
Does the glue trick work?
It is a well-known idea and a poor one. A drop of adhesive on the other half rarely bonds to a piece of brass sitting in a tight keyway, and what it does bond to is the cylinder, the pins and the face of the lock. That film then has to be dissolved before proper extractors can slide in. Keep the halves apart and dry.

What the census means at the door
23%
Newer homes. About 23% of homes in Brampton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
In newer developments the hardware is often the same finish and style from house to house. A locksmith can offer upgrades that match what is already there, so a stronger cylinder or a new lever set fits in without looking like an afterthought.
53%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 53% of homes in Brampton (2021 Census).
A mix of detached and attached housing means a mix of key habits: spare keys under pots at houses, fob-and-key combinations in buildings. A locksmith can improve both, with a proper key safe or keypad here and a tidy suite cylinder there.
