In plain words

When a key disappears, cutting yourself another copy solves the wrong half of the problem. You can get in again, but so can whoever finds the original. A same-visit rekey turns that around: the locksmith works through each cylinder the missing key operated, fitting new bottom pins on a conventional lock or resetting a homeowner-rekeyable one through its own procedure, and refits the lock to the door. The lost key still slides into the keyway but no longer lifts the pins to the right height, so it turns nothing. You leave with fresh keys cut on site and the same locks you already had.

Sound familiar?

You let a part-time employee go on Friday. The shop key is on a ring in their apartment, or their car, or a friend's kitchen, and on Monday morning the register and the stock room open with it.

How the visit goes

  1. 1

How many keys, and who gets them

Before pins are touched, the number of keys is agreed, because that number is the whole point of key control. The locksmith asks who in the household or business needs one: each adult, a teenager, a caregiver, the neighbour who feeds the cat, the landlord, the cleaner. Each name gets a key and the total is written down. Anyone who had a copy of the old key but is not on the new list is, from that moment, simply someone without a key. Knowing the count on day one is what makes it possible, years later, to say with confidence exactly how many keys to this property exist.

  2. 2

Handling a restricted or high-security keyway

Restricted and patented keyways rekey in much the same way, with more parts and a little more care. A high-security cylinder's own elements, a sidebar's finger pins, a rotating element or another system-specific part, are reset to the new key's profile alongside the ordinary pins, and the finished plug is checked before refitting. Key blanks for these systems are issued through whatever authorised channel that system uses, a letter, a registered account, a dealer agreement, or sometimes a key card; bring whatever credential you were given. The reward is that copies of the new key can only be made through that same channel, one of the stronger kinds of key control a household can have.

  3. 3

The code written down for next time

The new combination is recorded as a short code, either on a card the locksmith gives you or on the key tag, and a copy stays in the locksmith's job notes if you wish. That code is what makes future copies accurate: a key cut to code has fresh, original depths, while a copy of a worn key inherits every rounded edge. It also means a lost key years from now is met with a different code, never a repeat. Keep the card with the house papers, and when a new key is needed, ask for it to be cut from the code rather than traced from a tired one.

What affects the quote

  1. 1

    Travel to the property

Every call-out includes the drive. A house across town and a rural property at the end of a concession road involve different time on the road, and the quote reflects the trip.

  2. 2

How many cylinders are on the list

A front door with a deadbolt and a handle is two cylinders. Add the back door, the garage entry, a side door and a shed and the count climbs, and the quote follows the number of cylinders repinned.

  3. 3

    Entry as well as rekeying

If the lost key was your only key and you are locked out too, the door is opened first and that opening is quoted as its own step ahead of the rekey.

Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions

Advice · (289) 901-4354

Do I have to prove I live here before you rekey?

Yes, and it is a step that protects you. A rekey changes who can open the door, so the locksmith confirms the person asking has the standing to decide: photo identification matched to the address for an owner, a lease or bill for a tenant, management records for a superintendent or property manager. Say on the phone what you have so the visit starts smoothly.

Should I rekey when I move into a new home?

Lock manufacturers list moving as one of the main reasons to rekey, and it is easy to see why: previous owners, their relatives, a cleaner, a dog walker and a contractor may all hold copies you know nothing about. Rekeying every exterior cylinder in one visit resets the count to the keys in your hand, and it is a convenient moment to put every door on a single key as well.

I live in a condominium. Which locks are mine to rekey?

Your suite door is generally the one you can act on, and it may sit on a building master system, so the locksmith plans the rekey so the master still operates while the old change key stops working. Lobby doors, the parking gate, amenity rooms and the mailroom belong to the corporation; report a lost fob or key for those to the property manager, who deactivates or reissues it. The locksmith can help sort which is which.

What the census means at the door

23%

Newer homes. About 23% of homes in Brampton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Where most homes are recent, the doors themselves are sound and the work is mostly about keys and control: who holds them, whether contractor keys were retired, and whether one key can open everything. The visit is often more conversation than drilling.

53%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 53% of homes in Brampton (2021 Census).

In an area with both houses and attached homes, the work varies by the door. A detached house wants all its exterior doors on one key; a suite door wants a cylinder that suits a metal frame and respects building rules. A locksmith carries parts for both.
